Midlothian Police Officer Erick Oliva was uninjured after a vehicle struck his patrol SUV during a traffic stop Tuesday night. The accident took place about 10 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of W. U.S. Highway 287 at the 1500 block near S. U.S. Highway 67.
“The officer just had minor soreness. We were very fortunate. He was not transported to the hospital,” Support Services Commander Cody McKinney said. “He was checked out by medics on the scene and went to a local physician the next day.”
McKinney said Oliva was in the process of conducting a traffic stop when his vehicle was struck from behind. Both drivers of the other vehicles were uninjured. The cause of the accident has not been determined at this time and is under investigation by officers with the Mansfield Police Department. It is standard procedure for an outside agency to investigate an accident involving an officer, to avoid bias or conflicts of interest, McKinney explained.
He said Oliva’s cruiser does appear to be totaled, but the department has not received a report from its insurance company.
