Glen Carlisle, vice president of special projects at the Gerdau mill in Midlothian received regional recognition for his social responsibility work within the Dallas/Fort Worth community. The North Central Texas Council of Governments presented him with the Hot Stuff award at the organization’s board meeting on Feb 19.
“Volunteering within the Midlothian community has always been a passion for me,” Carlisle said. “My main objective related to social responsibility has always been to make Midlothian as safe as possible, while helping the elderly and children through our social projects. At Gerdau, we collaborate with our area partners to try and make an impact and a difference in our community.”
The award recognized Gerdau’s recent work sponsoring a 50-foot tower for Midlothian’s Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) radar system. The tower is part of a new radar network throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area – the first in the nation – offering higher resolution data that may provide earlier warning of severe weather. In addition to providing the labor to erect the tower, the company also provided the rebar for the foundation and the materials to construct the tower.
Additionally, Carlisle and other Gerdau employees volunteer with organizations such as Adopt-a-Highway and United Way. Employees at the mill also have a partnership with Manna House.
“Glen is a great asset to the Midlothian community, and I don’t know anyone locally who is quite as involved in community activities,” Mayor Pro Tem Joe Frizzell said. “I have never been around him when there was a time that I didn’t feel like I was with family.”
Carlisle started working at Gerdau as vice president and general manager of the mill in Midlothian in 2005, when Gerdau acquired Chaparral Steel. He has been working at the mill for 38 years, and has been socially active in the community his entire career. Carlisle is involved with the Midlothian Chamber of Commerce and the Midlothian Economic Development. He also sits on the board of the TrustUS Federal Credit Union.
