For the past several months I have been in search of an organization that I could partner with to promote healthy living, while maintaining my own level of fitness. I wanted to get Ellis County interested in taking the entire family to a place they could not only spend time together, but a place that would provide healthy living. This place had to be attractive to young children as well as senior adults. It had to provide a variety of events that would promote the social, spiritual and healthy aspect of living. I wanted it to be someplace that people could and would utilize all year around.

My search finally came to an end when I met with the leaders of the Waxahachie YMCA. Don't let the name fool you, this place is available to everyone in Ellis County. It will not only meet the physical needs of the members of your family by providing children and youth sports, fitness classes and exercise equipment for adults, but it meets the spiritual need of the family.

For those of you who know, you understand that I'm all about seeing that the spiritual component to everything we do is there. And the mission of the YMCA falls right in alignment with what I would like to see take place in families across Ellis County. Their mission is to “put Christian values into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.” That means every person in the family unit, from the youngest to the oldest member.

This week I'm kicking off my partnership with the YMCA. My goal is to take advantage of the fitness aspect of the organization while highlighting other programs and events they offer. You will be able to follow my journey each week as I train with some of their personal trainers, as well exercise classes being offered. I'm particularly excited and nervous about participating in the spin classes being offered. I've never taken a spin class. I have many friends that take spin, and they seem to hate it and like it at the same time. They offer different levels of spin such as spin, super spin and spin fusion. I think I'm going to start off by taking baby steps and getting my feet wet in the spin class. I hope to graduate to super spin in the near future, but I won't make any promises.

I'm also looking forward to the barbell strength and conditioning class that's being offered. It sounds fun, challenging and downright exciting. Yes. I get excited about sweating and working out. It does the body good. And this body hasn't been able to take part in intense workouts for quite some time now.

The other day I had my measurements and body fat composition tested. Needless to say, I wanted to burst into tears when I found out that I'm 30 pounds overweight and my body fat percentage is 13 points higher than what it should be. I have some high and lofty goals, but I'm ready to get back at it, and I'm looking forward to using the YMCA as a catalyst to become tone and lean.
