The Walnut Grove boys and girls basketball teams have been playing well of late.

At this point in the season, it's all about finding ways to get better and both the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats are doing that.

The eighth-grade A Wildcats came out on top 33-31 against Wester.

After not playing a game in several weeks, these young ladies were ready to hit the hard court. WGMS jumped out to an early 11-3 lead in the first, only to see that lead diminish going into the half to 16-15.

With some halftime adjustments, the girls ended the third quarter tied at 23. Late in the fourth, Wester took a two-point lead off a made three-point attempt. Then, with one minute remaining, Kialy Coleman got two of her four points on the evening with an offensive rebound put-back, which tied the game at 31.

Then, with seven seconds left in the game and after already ripping down 14 boards, Heidi Allen knocks down two clutch free throws to seal the deal. Leading the way on offense with nine points was Emma Arnold, Heidi Allen had seven, Riley Stover had five, Emma Beard and Kialy Coleman both had four and Brittney Gardner and Rayshauna Beason both had two.

The Lady Cats' eighth-grade B team came away with a 20-12 victory against Wester in the first district game.

The Lady Cats pulled ahead in the first quarter 6-0 and never looked back. The top scorer of the game was Julia Valdez with four points. Emma Pulido, Logan Ybarra, Rylie Wagoner, Shelby Garcia, Camille Lowery, Rachel Gray, Taylor Frey and Lacey Dagley each scored two.

The seventh-grade A Lady Cats played a tough match up last night against the Wester Wildcats and lost 41-39. The Lady Cats came out slow and found themselves down 21-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Then with some half time adjustments and hard work, the WGMS Lady Cats fought back to be down just 33-25 at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Cats went up by two points with 35 seconds left in the game, but fell short at the buzzer.

Leading scorers were: Jasmine Bailey with 19, Kaitlynn Lewis with six, Saige Klor and Kaylee Robinson with four and Kayla Aston and Julia Goerig with two each.

The seventh-grade girls B team played a hard-fought battle against Wester and lost 27-25.

The Lady Cats went neck and neck with Wester with a score of 6-6 at halftime. Leading the Lady Cats in points were Grace Hackney with five and Cora Brooks with four.

The Lady Cats defense was led in rebounds by Hackney, Fielding and Smith.

The seventh-grade boys B team battled hard, but lost 40-18 to Wester. The leading scorer was Sterling Garcia with 10 points.

The seventh-grade A team fell to Wester 47-37.

The wildcats hung in the game until the end. Leading scorers of the game were: Noah Parker with 12 points and Tristan Paschall with seven points. Peyton Culberson and Da'vione Stafford lead the team in the paint with many offensive and defensive rebounds.

The eighth-grade boys B team lost a heartbreaker to Wester 38-31 after having the lead in the fourth quarter. The team got outstanding efforts by Sean Cornelius and Timothy Chamber who lead the team with 10 points each.

The eighth-grade A was down 28-19 at the end of the third quarter and ended up winning 40-34.

Kaden Archie led the comeback in the fourth quarter with 14 points and finished with 19 total. Jerreth Stern finished with nine points and Quinton Joseph scored five. The team really showed their resiliency.
