Monday is Columbus Day and was created in 1937 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared it a national holiday in honor of Italian sailor/explorer Christopher Columbus.
Many — but not all — public offices, banks and credit unions will be closed because of the holiday. Here's a list of local establishment closures on Columbus Day to help remind you who's NOT going to be at work this Monday:
• Dublin City Hall and all other city offices
• Most county, state and federal offices [except for first responders such as fire, EMS and law enforcement]
• Local banks and credit unions
• The US Post Office
Notable exceptions to the holiday closures in our area that will remain open on Columbus Day are Stephenville ISD, Tarleton State University, City of Stephenville, Walmart and HEB in Stephenville — and Brookshire Brothers in Dublin — and the Stephenville Empire-Tribune.
In other words, closures on Columbus Day are kind of a mixed bag, so you might want to call ahead to make sure the place you’re heading for is open.
