MIDLOTHIAN – Soon, more voters will have cast a ballot in Ellis County during the 2016 early voting season than voted in the 2012 general election.
As of Monday night, 33,340 voters had cast ballots by mail or in-person at a early voting location across the county, according to documents from the Ellis County Election Office.
In the 2012 general election for when President Barack Obama was running for a second term, 34,559 voters cast ballots by mail or in person in Ellis County, according to information from the election office.
“It is nice everyone is coming out,” said Jana Onyon, elections administrator for the Ellis County.
So far, all of the county's seven early voting polling places have been able to keep up with the influx of voters, she said.
“Our estimated wait time is 10 minutes at the larger locations,” Onyon said. “At smaller places like Walnut Grove Middle School, voters can usually walk right in or wait no more than 5 minutes.”
As of Monday, 7,669 ballots had been cast at the Midlothian Conference Center polling place and 1,906 had been cast at the Walnut Grove Middle School polling place. The first day of early voting on Oct. 24 saw the highest number of votes cast so far at the Conference Center at 1,356. Walnut Grove peaked on Friday at 319 votes cast.
Across the county, almost 33 percent of registered voters had cast ballots by the close of polls on Monday, according to the elections office records.
While no total voter registration is available to determine voter turn out in the 2012 election, the county does have more voters this year than then, Onyon said.
“We have grown even since January by 7,000 voters,” she said.
