MIDLOTHIAN — With hopes to continue general maintenance and honoring those who have passed, the Midlothian Cemetery Association has begun its annual "Operation Christmas Card."
The fundraiser, which began more than four decades ago, asks that residents donate monies that would have otherwise been used for postage on Christmas cards to the association.
"This was started well before I took over as treasurer and it is something that I just want want to keep going," said Margie Vaughn, the association's treasurer and whose husband is buried in the historic cemetery.
“We do it because we have loved ones down there and we love that cemetery,” Vaughn previously told the Mirror. “My children gave me a cement bench there, and sometimes I go and sit there to talk to him.”
According to cemeteries-of-tx.com, a database maintained by Rhonda Mangum Combs, April Sanders Shaw, and Rebecca Johnson Kelly, the Midlothian Cemetery has 2,706 known and 33 unknown gravesites.
The cemetery, located south of U.S. Highway 287 on Farm-to-Market 663, is a designated Texas State Historical Cemetery. All who donate will be highlighted in the Dec. 28 Mirror.
The deadline to submit donations is Dec. 26. Those wishing to donate to Operation Christmas Card may call Vaughn at 972-775-3080 or mail donations to the Association at P.O. Box 1423, Midlothian, TX 76065.
