WAXAHACHIE — Venus Resident Rodney Jenkins Jr. received two of 38 indictments recently issued by the Ellis County Grand Jury.

Jenkins was indicted March 8 on the charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault of a public servant.

According to the indictments, Jenkins allegedly caused bodily injury to the victim by hitting him in the face with a deadly weapon — a shovel. The indictment also alleges that Jenkins caused bodily harm to an Ellis County Sheriff’s Deputy by kicking him in testicles as the deputy was placing Jenkins into a patrol car after his arrest.

According to a press release from the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the 400 block of Mathews Road in Venus in response to a disturbance on Dec. 30, 2016.

“Upon arrival deputies were met by Maypearl Police, who advised the suspect had run off into the woods. A perimeter was established as deputies spoke with the complainants, a husband and wife who advised their son had accused them of taking his medications,” Ellis County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer JoAnn Livingston stated. “The couple said their son had tried to choke his father and had hit him with a shovel, and had also punched his mother before exiting the residence.”

Livingston said as deputies were on scene, Jenkins walked back up to the house where a struggle ensued as deputies went to take him into custody. During the arrest, one of the deputies was kicked.

According to online records from the Wayne McCollum Detention Center Jenkins was booked at 9:43 a.m. on Dec. 31, 2016. He was booked on the charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, search or transport and assault of a public servant. He is also held on two charges of probation revocation, with no bond set on either of those charges as of Saturday afternoon.

Jail records also indicate Jenkins remains in custody at the detention center with bonds totaling $36,000.

The court has appointed Shani Felemins as Jenkins attorney. Jenkins’ arraignment is set to take place at 9 a.m. on April 4 in the 40th Judicial District Court.
