WAXAHACHIE — In just a few short days, one Waxahachie art studio will be filled wall to wall and from the ceiling to the floor with original art by the youth of Ellis County.

On Tuesday, April 4, students will begin submitting hundreds of paintings, sculptures, drawings and photographs for an annual competition held at ART on the Square, located at 113 W. Franklin in Waxahachie.

Heralded as one of the most impressive youth art events in North Texas, the competition — which is presented by Ellis County Art Association — showcases original art by children residing in Ellis County enrolled in public, private or homeschool grades K through 12. In addition to first, second, third, and honorable mention awards at every grade level, one scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior.

“We have a large mailing list comprised of schools and art teachers with most of the entries submitted by students through an art teacher, but we’d like everyone to know that entries do not have to be created within a classroom," said Ellis County Art Association President, Tina Bohlman. "I believe there is a young artist in every family and we encourage any school-age child residing in Ellis County to enter this competition."

Co-chairs David Harper and Jana Jennings are anticipating a spectacular exhibition. “Fine art events for children are essential to the cultural environment in every community, and if you love art, especially children’s art, you must plan to attend this show,” said Mr. Harper.

Mrs. Harper added, “Ellis County Art Association sponsors this annual event in an effort to promote and encourage children’s interest in the fine arts. Without a doubt, this body of work is one of the best exhibits of creativity and talent you’ll see anywhere; it’s expressive, direct and uninhibited.”

Organized in1958, the Ellis County Art Association brings “ART to life in Ellis County” by presenting art events such as the annual Youth Art Show. The 501(c)3 non-profit arts organization is supported by membership dues, individual and corporate gifts, grants, and proceeds from fundraisers.

The exhibition opens to the public and begins April 4. A reception honoring students and teachers is Saturday, April 8 from 1 – 3 p.m. at ART ON THE SQUARE gallery, located at 113 West Franklin Street in Waxahachie.

A scholarship award and "Teacher of the Year" award will be announced during the reception. The show continues through April 13. For more information, visit www.EllisCountyArt.net, email admin@elliscountyart.net or call 972-937-3414.
