WAXAHACHIE — Corsicana resident Israel Alvarado, 35, was one of 41 people indicted by the Ellis County Grand Jury on March 22. Alvarado was indicted on seven theft charges from offenses in the jurisdictions of both the Waxahachie and Ennis Police Departments.

According to the indictments, Alvarado is alleged to have unlawfully appropriated items from Walmart and H-E-B on several occasions. The alleged items included jackets, beer, dog food, flowers, three television sets and one football. These offenses allegedly took place on Oct. 24, 2016, Nov. 2, 2016, Nov. 8, 2016, Nov. 12, 2016, Nov. 13, 2016, Nov. 15, 2016, and Nov. 28, 2016.

“He allegedly stole beer from the HEB grocery store located at 800 N. U.S. Highway 77 on two occasions in one day, Nov. 15, 2016. On Nov. 16, the unidentified suspect returned to the store,” Waxahachie Police Lt. Todd Woodruff said. “This time, Waxahachie Police Det. Barry Owens happened to be inside H-E-B looking into the previous thefts.”

Woodruff said a store employee notified Owens that the suspect had returned.

“Detective Owens approached the suspect and he agreed to come to the Police Station for an interview about the theft offenses. He was released afterward,” Woodruff said. “Warrants were subsequently requested for his arrest. He was arrested in Hillsboro on our warrants on Dec. 20, 2016.”

Ennis Police Lt. Mike Hopson said there were multiple alleged incidents of theft by Alvarado in Ennis that took place in November 2016.

“On Nov. 13 at approximately 3:28 p.m., an officer was dispatched to 101 S. Clay, that is HEB here in Ennis. Apparently, the reported person knew him. He went through register No. 8 pushing an H-E-B cart towards the exit,” Hopson said. “He picked up a flower arrangement and placed it in his basket and pushed his cart past the last point of sale.”

Hopson said Alvarado allegedly stole $194.18 worth of property during the trip. The items allegedly taken by Alvarado during this offense included roses, three packs of Bud Light, two packs of Corona and dog food. A photo of the license plate and, after employees called the police, police stopped Alvarado on Interstate Highway 45.

Hopson added that on Nov. 2, 2016, Alvarado allegedly stole several kinds of beer from Walmart and then on Nov. 12, 2016, Alvarado allegedly stole two televisions in addition to beer.

According to the indictments, Alvarado was convicted twice of theft of a firearm in the 13th Judicial District Court in Navarro County on June 1, 2012. He was also convicted of possession of a controlled substance in the 40th Judicial District Court of Ellis County in Waxahachie on Feb. 16, 2006.

According to online records from the Ellis County District Clerk’s Office, Waxahachie Police arrested Alvarado a second time on Jan. 12. Online Records from the Wayne McCollum Detention show that Alvarado was booked into the jail the same day at 4:45 p.m.

As of 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Alvarado remains in custody at the detention center on bonds totaling $29,700.

In addition to the theft charges Alvarado is being held on a parole violation for unlawful possession of a firearm, two charges of theft of property (more than $100 but less than $750) from the Mexia Police Department, driving while license invalid with previous, theft of property less than $2,500 with two or more previous convictions and release of surety/theft of property less than $2,500 from Navarro County.

In total, the Ellis County Grand Jury also handed down 54 indictments on March 22:
