WAXAHACHIE — With the annual Relay for Life of Central Ellis County less than a month away, one team was already striking up the fun and funds Saturday afternoon at Hilltop Lanes.
“Friends for Life” — a Relay for Life team that consists of Patti Junkin, Cindy Smith, Patty Smith, Peggy Brady, Beverly Horak, Michelle LaQuay, Jackie Hill, Susan Rominger, Priscilla Parker and Mary Ruth Mitchell — raised a little over $4,000 during the three-hour event. The ladies coordinated a 9-pin bowling tournament with roughly 80 participants on the 16 teams and concurrently conducted a silent auction. In total, the group had 35 items donated for the auction plus door prizes, with the big-ticket item being a set of four tickets to a Texas Rangers game.
Prizes were also awarded to the first, second and third place teams, but all proceeds raised went directly to Relay for Life of Central Ellis County.
The core of the group has participated in most, if not all, of the Relay for Life of Central Ellis County events since the program started.
“I think it was a wonderful event and the atmosphere was great. We had a fun time for a great cause,” said Junkin, who took the lead on organizing the evening for a second-consecutive year. “We can’t wait to do it again next year. We also thank all of those who participated and the businesses that donated items for the silent auction and door prizes.”
The annual Relay for Life of Central Ellis County is planned for Friday, May 12 from 6-10 p.m. at Getzendaner Park, located at 400 South Grand Ave. in Waxahachie.
