MIDLOTHIAN — An Ellis County dive bar known for its live music and massive stage is cooking up one heck of a barbecue bash.
The annual “BBQ & Blues” event will take place this Sunday, August 6 at The Oasis Bar and Grill in Midlothian.
In its seventh year serving smoked meats and gourmet sauces, The Oasis in Midlothian is dishing out an afternoon of the Lone Star State’s best barbecue and Texas Country tunes. This year’s event will feature dozens of Texas BBQ sauces, prizes and live music from Jason Cloud Band and Cody Joe Pope.
The 2017 cook-off categories will specialize in beef, chicken and ribs and its organizers are expecting another high turnout.
“We have a lot of people from Kansas City and all over the state that come down here for the event,” said John Millson, owner of The Oasis. “We’ve got the biggest live music stage in Ellis County, so we’re looking at 200 to 300 people showing up.”
Admission is free for all event-goers and $5 for those wanting to sample the barbecue. There will be a $10 entry fee for the cooks, and the winner of each category takes all.
Anyone looking to compete in the event can pick up an entry form from the bartender on duty at The Oasis. Competitors are not required to cook on site. Contestants should make enough for both judges and guests.
“It's free music and really good barbecue for less than you’d spend on a hamburger at Whataburger," Millson said. "It’s just a chance to see what our new place is all about.”
The cook-off will be held from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and judging will begin at 3 p.m. The Oasis is located at 4720 Ruby Ave. in Midlothian.
