MIDLOTHIAN — Residents have an opportunity not to be “shellfish” and donate to a worthy cause with Ellis County SPCA’s sixth annual “Paws for a Cause” fundraiser this Saturday, Aug. 26.
“Our fundraiser is our big, big thing,” began Joan McGrath, Director of the Ellis County SPCA. “It ends up being a really big group of animal lovers under one roof, and it’s really fun.”
This year's themed tailgate party will be held at the Midlothian Civic Center to raise funds for the shelter to continue to rehome thousands of animals through its rescuing operation and facility amenities.
With more than $60,000 made in 2016, McGrath goes on to note that the money raised will go toward the expenses of running the shelter.
From salaries of the staff to paying shelter bills and costs that come with taking care of the animals, this weekend’s event is vital to the organization.
“This is where we get most of our money to take care of the animals that come into the shelter,” McGrath acknowledged.
“Last year was our biggest one yet, and right now with all of the silent and live auction items, we’re hoping it’s going to be bigger than last year,” she added.
With tempting auction items, McGrath encourages the community to join in the bid either in person or online.
“People can join in on early bidding on Friday, and you actually don’t have to go to the dinner to bid,” McGrath emphasized. “But you can get a bidding number and just bid online. And if you can’t make the dinner you can even bid on your phone, so that option is open as well.”
“There’s a little bit of everything. We’ve got trips, gift cards, animal stuff, dinners, a day with police officers, some guns, jewelry, purses, wine tasting – there’s a little bit of everything.,” she included.
Emceed by KDFW Fox 4's meteorologist, Jen Myers, McGrath goes on to say that the fundraiser will also include dinner.
“For the dinner, it’ll be $40 a ticket,” McGrath explained. “We’ve had a lot of people also sponsor the tables, the venue, the advertising, and a lot have come forward to help us with that.”
Supporting the event McGrath lists the sponsors for this year that include: Citizens Bank, Bittersweet bakery, Access Self Storage, LLI Construction, Victron, Animal hospital of Ovilla, 3L Blue Line design, Tony &, Charlotte Bennett, Kay Lynn Collier Bill, Wally’s Party Factory, Grant & Weedon, Jeff, Kosoris DDS, Kellly Bend Kennels, and City Real estate.
As well as Ashgrove Cement, Legacy Pools & Spas, Liz & John Cunliffe, Real Tex Ventures, Spay Neuter Network, Interbank, David, Zabojmik – Farmers Insurance, Totonka Holding Corporation, SPCA of Texas, Holmes Millet, Jim & Gayle Tuma, Roach Waste Company, and Texas coalition of Animal protection.
Guaranteed to be a memorable evening, McGrath invites the Ellis County community to attend the event and help fundraise for the shelter’s sake.
“It’s fun to talk to people who’ve adopted, have donated, and who’ve been around for years and it’s just a really fun evening, and we hope the community comes out,” McGrath finished.
Paws for the Cause is scheduled for this Saturday, August 26, and will be held at Midlothian’s Conference Center on First Community Drive, Midlothian. The event will start at 6 p.m. with a live and silent auction and dinner.
