DECATUR — Three second-half interceptions helped propel Midlothian Heritage to a two-touchdown win over the Decatur Eagles on Friday.

The Jaguars, who entered ranked No. 9 in the AP Class 4A state poll, carried a 14-7 lead into the locker room at the half. With both teams trading blows behind stifling defenses in the third quarter, (3-0) Heritage found the end zone three times in the fourth quarter. The offense was led by running back Nathan Gaskamp (172 yards, 2 TD, wide receiver Kerrion Fields (164 yards, 2 TD) and quarterback Landon Ledbetter (241 passing yards, 2 TD).

Gaskamp recorded touchdown runs of three and 42 yards in the fourth quarter, while Fields hauled in a 36-yard Ledbetter pass for his second on the evening.

“That was a physical game against a great opponent. That was a really good football team we just played. We played them on their home field where they have a long of good things going on and a lot of tradition in this town," said Midlothian Heritage head football coach Lee Wiginton. "They have a lot of outstanding coaches that do an unbelievable job. They have some great players. It was a great game."

“The defense played outstanding all night, they really did. Their quarterback is really special. They have some great players, and I thought our defense did a great job of containing them." he added.

The Heritage defense held Decatur to 268 yards of offense and limited quarterback Wilson Hicks to 174 yards on 21-of-33 passing.

“Here’s what I love so much about this team," Wiginton said. "If you’re on the field, you have a job to do and you go out there and try to do that job. If the defense is on the field, it doesn’t matter if the ball is on the one-yard line — it is their job to stop them. If the offense is on the field, it doesn’t matter where you start — it is your job to move the ball. Both the offense and defense did a good job. They continued to grind and continued to believe in one another. We had good players making good plays throughout the game.”

“With each week, we are getting better and better,” he added.

Heritage returns home to play (2-1) Crandall at Midlothian ISD Stadium on Friday, Sept. 22. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
