Regulation was not enough time on the soccer pitch to decide the winner of the 4A state semifinal championship match between Midlothian Heritage and Liberty Hill. Neither were two 10-minute overtime periods Wednesday afternoon at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown.
The two teams were knotted at one after 100 minutes of action.
Megan McCarthy then stopped three of the four penalty kicks sent her way in the shootout and Brittiney Gardner scored the match-winner.
The Jaguars, who are in their first state tournament in program history, defeated Liberty Hill in shootouts, 2-1 (3-1).
Heritage received its lone goal in regulation off of the foot of Grace Hackney in the fourth minute on a Kayla Aston assist from six yards out.
Liberty Hill tied the match in the 54th minute on an unassisted goal by Athena Brown. As a team, the Jaguars took five shots on goal to the four of the Lady Panthers.
Kayla Aston and Kylar Kenter also found the back of the net for Heritage during the shootout. Abbey Janicek scored the lone shootout goal for Liberty Hill.
Heritage improved to 28-3-1 on the season, while Liberty Hill fell to 27-3.
Midlothian Heritage now faces the winner of Jasper and Kilgore at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the 4A state championship at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown.
