The District 8-4A championship was on the line Friday night in Midlothian, and the Godley Wildcats pounced on the opportunity.
Midlothian Heritage could not capitalize on six Godley errors and fell to the Wildcats in the regular-season finale, 9-4.
"We battled. We fought and I thought we played OK," Heritage head baseball coach Justin Blackwell said. "We had one bad inning where they hit the ball hard, but that is a really good baseball team. Godley is a really good team and has been to the fifth round of the playoffs each of the last two years and they have everybody back. Other than that one bad inning I thought we battled and scrapped to get back into the game."
He added, "We are a good baseball team, too. Moving forward, it is time to go now. We are in the playoffs, so it is time to go."
The Jaguars dropped to 18-5 on the season and 10-2 in District 8-4A.
Heritage took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning after Cade Sumbler roped a two-out double to left-center field and Caisen Clower reached on an error.
Both runners scored on a pair of Wildcat errors.
The Wildcats then plated six runs in the top of the fourth inning on five straight hits and a pair of walks for a 7-1 lead.
Both teams added one run in the fifth and seventh innings.
"We will take a little bit of humility [from the loss] and a little bit of a kick in the pants and get back to work," Blackwell said. "We have to continue to improve our game, continue to fight and continue to battle."
Godley won the district crown with a 21-1 mark and 11-1 in district action. Stephenville finished third at 7-5 and Glen Rose snagged the final playoff spot at 5-7.
Midlothian Heritage faces Fort Worth Castleberry in a three-game series next weekend in the 4A Region I bi-district championship.
Game on is at 7 p.m. Thursday, while game two is at 5:30 p,m. Friday and game three — if needed — will follow.
All three games will be played at Brewer High School, located at 1025 W Loop 820 in Fort Worth.
