For the first time in since opening its doors in 2015, Atkins Seafood is now open Friday and Saturday evenings.
“I’ve always wanted a restaurant in Waxahachie, being from here,” Tres Atkins said, adding that when he took his leap of faith to fish for a living, he always knew he’d come back to his hometown.
What makes the local seafood market and restaurant unique is that Atkins and his crew are the only ones who touch the product. “My boats catch it. My boats deliver it, and I retail it here in my facility,” he elaborated.
Staying open later in the evenings on Friday and Saturday has always been part of the plan. Atkins described his goals as methodical. He had to train and establish logistics for the restaurant first. Initially, there were folding chairs and card tables in the eating area at one point. Folks would even eat on their tailgate in the parking lot.
Now the restaurant is set up with commercial seating and operates Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m.—6 p.m. and on Friday and Saturdays from 10 a.m.—8 p.m.
“We know we are going to have to get bigger. People are asking for it all the time,” Atkins added. “People are already asking when we will be open Thursday nights.”
The new nightly hours have been in effect for a couple of weeks and Kristin Murray, who runs the register, said the late hours have been busy.
“It was a lot busier than we thought it would be. We didn’t really have an open seat for a while, but it was a great opening night,” Murray described.
She also pointed out how the restaurant is BYOB.
