Chautauqua Assembly 2013 at Getzendaner Park

The 2013 Chautauqua Assembly will be held Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Chautauqua Auditorium in Waxahachie’s Getzendaner Park. This year’s theme is “Car Crazy: An American Love Affair.”

Opening ceremonies begin at noon and the event includes a full lineup of presentations, demonstrations and special events focused on the automobile.

As a special treat, this year’s Assembly will include a free showing of the Disney movie “Cars” at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27 in Getzendaner Park.

Presentations for this year’s Assembly include: A conversation with Henry Ford; The Power of Combustion; The Ten Greatest Car Scenes in Movie History; and the Texas A&M Debate Team presentation on “Self Driving Cars.”

Midlothian Classic Wheels, the Dallas Model A Club, Carl’s Custom Cars and the Texas State Technical College Automotive Department will also be hosting events in the park near the Chautauqua.

The family-friendly event is open to all.

SJCS Oktoberfest at Waxahachie Civic Center

St. Joseph Catholic School is anticipating a big crowd at this year’s Oktoberfest event. The function is scheduled for 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Waxahachie Civic Center. It will consist of a silent and live auction, a biergarten, kinderfest, more than 40 vendor booths and lunch prepared by the Knights of Columbus. There will also be live entertainment, a karaoke contest and a washer tournament. All the proceeds from the event go to benefit SJCS. SPCA Western Wish Upon a Paw fundraiser

Enjoy live music, barbecue, silent and live auctions, and hear from Rep. Jim Pitts at the Midlothian Conference Center from 6-10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.

Screams Halloween Park opens

Screams Halloween Park, 2511 Farm-to-Market Road 66 in Waxahachie, will open on Fridays and Saturdays from 7:30-11 p.m. from Sept. 27 until Oct. 27.

Habitat for Humanity to hold fundraiser at Belk

Habitat for Humanity of Ellis County will hold a fundraising event at Belk, 1540 Highway 77 N. in Waxahachie from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.  Habitat members will sell tickets that can be used toward purchases at Belk from 6-10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9. Proceeds go to help raise funds to build a new house.


Midlothian Downtown Farmers Market

The Midlothian Downtown Business Association will host its downtown farmers market from 8 a.m.-noon every Saturday until October at Heritage Park by the Larkin Newton Log Cabin.

Discover Girl Scouts

The Girl Scout Recruitment drive will kick off at 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Brown Street Church of Christ, 2471 Brown St. in Waxahachie. Local girls and their families are invited to come participate in a fun activity, meet new friends and sign up for Girl Scouts.
