San Antonio resident Jonathon Michael Dehoyos, 22, lost his life in an accident that took place along Interstate Highway 35E on Monday evening. First responders were dispatched to the 386 mile marker just prior to the Highway 34 exit ramp at around 5:15 p.m.
“Yesterday afternoon a litter truck was picking up trash along the side of I-35E at mile marker 385 near Italy. A gentleman was on the back of the truck. He jumped off to pick up some trash,” said Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 Jackie Miller Jr. “The driver didn’t see him and went to back up and backed over him. It was a tragic accident.”
Italy Police Chief Diron Hill said Dehoyos was part of a work team that is employed by a company out of San Antonio who subcontracts with the Texas Department of Transportation to pick up trash and debris along interstate corridors.
“A witness, who also works for the company and was following another work truck, stated Mr. Dehoyos was struck by the other work truck as it was backing up,” Hill said.
In addition to the Italy police officers responding to the scene, members of the Italy Volunteer Fire Department, Ellis County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety provided assistance.
Miller pronounced Dehoyos dead at the scene at 5:39 p.m. and had his body taken to the Dallas County Medical Examiners Office for a complete autopsy. Miller said no foul play was involved.
The Italy Police Department is investigating the accident, but no charges have been filed against the driver of the work truck.
