Betty "Berteen" Cornelius Spradling

Oct. 17, 1938 –

Dec. 25, 2013

Betty “Berteen” Cornelius Spradling was born to Ruben Bert and Vera Cornelius in Bodcaw, Ark. on Oct. 17, 1938. She returned to Our Lord on Dec. 25, 2013.

During her time with us, here on Earth. Betty was voted the "1957 Beauty Queen" of Hope High School, and graduated in 1957. She then married David Russell and became the proud mother of Mike, Gary, and Teresa Russell. After their divorce, Betty went to work at Texas Instruments where she worked in the manufacturing of some the world's first microchips, and was the Captain of her Bowling League.

After leaving TI, Betty married Jan C. Childs in 1963, she became the proud mother of Karla Janiene Childs in 1964. Divorcing again in 1974, Betty began her life as a single mother of four. In 1983, she married Thomas Mitchell Spradling and settled in Midlothian.

She became employed at General Motors in 1985, and retired in 1995. In making Midlothian her home for her last 30 years, yards sales became Betty's passion as she would bring home not only the items she had purchased, but tales of her and her "Garage Sale Buddies," trying to beat each other out to the next sale. Other passions included her love of the Midlothian Senior Citizens Center, cooking, and of course, her dogs. She will be sorely missed, by many.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Ruben Bert Cornelius and Vera Bell (Smith) Cornelius; a brother, Neil Cornelius; sister, Frances Dodson.

She is survived by her husband, T. Mitchell Spradling; children: Michael Wayne Russell and wife Linda, Gary Thomas Russell and wife Debbie, Teresa Lyn Russell, Karla Janiene Sims; grandchildren, Gary Thomas Russell Jr. and wife Donna Joseph Andrew McAfee, R.C. Sims, and Chantal Marie Sims; great-grandchildren Tyler J. Russell, Breanna Yancy, Charles Yancy III.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28 at Midlothian Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Atchley officiating.
