BANGS — The Bangs Dragons limited Coleman to a single touchdown over the first three periods, but a late surge by the Bluecats secured a 22-6 victory Friday night in the District 4-3A Division II opener for both teams.
Coleman (5-1, 1-0) — playing without injured quarterback Bryson Hammonds — grabbed an 8-0 lead with just 1:08 left in the first half as Riley Harris scored on a 1-yard carry.
Bangs (2-3, 0-1) kept Coleman off the board throughout the third period, but the Bluecats padded their advantage with 11:10 left on a 9-yard touchdown carry by Harris, making the score 15-0.
Coleman tacked on an insurance touchdown with 8:31 remaining on a 19-yard scoring toss from Denton Allen to Darrian Hunter.
The Dragons tallied their only points with 4:47 remaining as Terick Flores galloped 44 yards to the end zone.
Bangs finished with 219 yards of total offense — 136 rushing and 83 passing — with a pair of turnovers. Coleman amassed 309 yards — 187 on the ground and 122 through the air — while giving the ball away twice.
Flores led the Dragons with 46 yards rushing while Zach Allen chipped in 44, Colton Martin added 19, Colton Brewer added 15 and Brian Sterling finished with 12. Through the air, Brewer connected on 7 of 15 passes for 54 yards while Seth Anderson was 1 for 3 for 29 yards. Kevin Blaine caught four passes for 48 yards, Justin Wilson hauled in two receptions for 22 yards and Sterling made two grabs for 13 yards.
Coleman received 112 yards rushing and two scores from Harris while Xavier Nunez chipped in 30 yards on the ground, followed by Allen with 24. Allen completed all five of his pass attempts for 89 yards while Nunez went 3 of 7 for 33 yards with a pick. Leading receivers included Allen with four catches for 59 yards, Hunter with three for 43 yards and a touchdown and Terran Holloway caught one pass for 20 yards.
Next week, Bangs will attempt to rebound at home against Tolar (5-1, 0-1) — which is coming off a 57-20 loss to Eastland, while Coleman hosts Cisco (4-1, 1-0)‚ which hammered Dublin, 67-14, Friday night.
