ROCKWALL, Texas — Midlothian's fearsome golf fivesome of Jasmine Zhang, Kelly, Dunn, Macie Gaither, Kylie Campbell and Kyrti Douglass finished two strokes behind sixth place Highland Park High School during Monday's regional tournament at the Rockwall Golf and Athletic Club.
Zhang, who golfed 78 on the front and back nine, led the Lady Panthers in strokes on Rockwall's 7,281-yard 18-hole course. Dunn (92) and Gaither (94) followed Zhang. Both Campbell and Douglass finished with first-day totals of 105.
Douglass, Dunn and Zhang dropped birdies on holes three and 17. The five girls also incurred 32 bogeys, 19 double bogeys and 12 triple bogeys during day one.
Zhang, who is tied for third place individually with Grandbury's Mollee-Jo Crain, shot six over par. She also has the second most par three's, par four's and is in a 23-player tie for ninth place in most birdies.
Despite the seeming distance from a state championship berth, Liberty High School — the tournament's leader — was only 45 strokes ahead of Midlothian after day one. Justin Wakeland High School, the holder of the tournament's second-place position, earned a first day total of 353.
Midlothian was scheduled to restart the regional competition at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday with results posting after the Midlothian Mirror's noon deadline.
