The Midlothian Panther tennis team concluded its fall season Friday night with three matches at the Area tournament in Waco.
The Area tournament consists of 16 teams from 5A districts 7 and 8. †
The Panthers entered the tournament with an overall record of 14-8 with a schedule packed with top-20 ranked schools across the state.
Midlothian opened up against Waco Midway, the eventual area champions. The Panthers battled hard, but came up short like every other team that has faced Midway this year. Midway came in ranked No. 10 in the state with a 17-0 record.
The Panthers then faced off against Harker Heights and pulled off the 10-8 victory. The team lead 4-3 after doubles with strong performances by the duos of Savannah Payne and Kaleigh Jantzen and Andrew Windham an freshman Caleb Skidmore. The teams were going back and forth in the six-hour match before senior Zach Wagnon put a volley away in a three-set win to secure the teamsí win.
Midlothian faced Cedar Hill in the final match of the season. The Panthers avenged an earlier loss to the Longhorns by beating them 10-9. The team started up 4-3 with a big three-set win by the mixed doubles team of Max Wilson and Savanna Sears. The Panthers were led by the play of junior Charlie Scott, who not only won in doubles with Zach Wagnon, but also won a huge three-set match in singles.
The girls were led by wins in both singles and doubles by Julia Deloach who won 6-4, 6-4 in singles. The Panthers clinched the 10th and final win with Amber Hamel winning 6-1, 6-4.
The final top-10 Area rankings are: 1.Waco Midway, 2. Duncanville, 3. Mansfield, 4. Belton, 5. Midlothian, 6. Cedar Hill, 7. Harker Heights, 8. Killeen Ellison, 9. Copperas Cove and 10. Desoto.
Midlothian finished its great season with a 16-9 record.
