There are many successful businesswomen in the city of Midlothian, but probably few quite as busy as Nelda Hattendorf.

This go-getter rocks a 40-hour-a-week job as a business systems analysis for a government entity, which she has done for the last 17 years, and spends her "free time" self-starting her own business ventures.

Nelda is not only a successful career woman, but she has been the wife of Billy Jack Hattendorf for 12 years. Together they have one son, Garrett, who attends the LaRue Miller Elementary School. Both agree that their eight-year-old is the light of their lives.

The couple has lived in Midlothian since relocating in 2006, and they admit they absolutely love their town.

This busy lady explains where she obtained her determined work ethic.

“I learned to be a multitasker by watching my mom as I grew up. She is such an amazing woman who was always able to juggle so many things at the same time and do it so happily and gracefully," Nelda said. "Both my parents worked tirelessly to give us kids (my sister, my brother and I) amazing lives and opportunities. Now I want to do that for my son. I want him to learn that staying focused and working hard does pay off. I do what I do for my family."

Nelda proves her dedication and discipline every day as she has worked several outside gigs, in addition to her regular day job.

She confessed, “I have had my hand in multiple pots for as long as I can remember. I seem to always have something going on, in my effort to try and get ahead in life. Although I have not reached running my own empire, the drive to do so is still within me.”

Nelda’s husband, Jack, said he provides his unconditional support in everything she does.

"Anyone that knows her, easily sees just how passionate she is about her business endeavors," Jack said. "She is always striving for success so she can help give her and her family the best life possible.”

He added, “I am more than willing to give her my honest opinion when she asks for it. I assist her wherever and whenever possible. There are times I'm unable to be by her side and help out with the heavy lifting when that's all I want to do. But more importantly, I am always there to share her joy on good days, as well as to share the disappointment on the bad days.”

For the last 15 years, Nelda has embodied the Avon philosophy in standing for "beauty, innovation, empowerment, and, above all, for women.”

“I first signed up to sell Avon in 2003 and worked it for about a year and a half. I always seemed to just be breaking even, so I stopped for a while," she explained. "After a few years hiatus, I signed up again in 2007, mostly because I missed the discounted merchandise, but I had a little more knowledge about managing a business online. The second time around I was definitely more successful. Now I am fully an Avon online business. The extra income has always come in handy whether it was paying for gas, groceries or contributing to a bill, and, occasionally it becomes just my 'fun' money."

After a one-year stint as an independent distributor of SeneGence lipstick, a product she ran across on Facebook, Nelda decided the requests for Avon products remained too high to juggle both. She also added that she is currently liquidating her SeneGence inventory.

Last October, Nelda started yet another a new adventure — an independent business owner for People United Reaching Everyone (PURE).

"It is an amazing line of organic, all natural health and wellness products, with truly no fillers or artificial additives. I was approached by a good friend of mine who is in the medical industry. She knows I always have an eye out for a good business opportunity, so she presented the business aspect and raved about the products," Nelda said. “[...] After countless hours of research, I decided to jump in."

After trying her new products herself, she relayed, “I am feeling fantastic and now have gotten my family to also start taking PURE. It’s safe for kids because it is truly all-natural, so even my son Garrett is taking it, along with me. The testimonies I have heard are amazingly jaw dropping and very inspiring. I’m super excited about this new avenue of my life. I can now offer the opportunity to great health along with my Avon beauty products."

Further explaining her new business, Nelda added, “A couple of years ago the extra income was helpful in allowing us to obtain our new house and land out in the country. Every little bit helps no matter what the amount is. I have redirected some of my extra earnings to help my family. My father was recently diagnosed with stage 2 prostate cancer. His portion of the treatments was a little on the hefty side, so being able to step in along with my siblings and help financially, was an absolute blessing. Now he can solely focus on his treatments and not worry about paying for the medical bills.”

Nelda has spoken to countless women over the years, explaining what she does and how to be a successful businesswoman, whether she was selling them something or just giving them the proper information or accommodating advice.

She said she hopes to have inspired others to at least dabble in the adventures God has laid in their paths.

“I never want to live with what ifs," Nelda explained. I may have failed at things in the past, but I have learned from each of them. At the end of the day, I can say, at the very least, that I tried.”

Nelda added, “In all my adventures throughout my life, I have never taken a step without praying about each opportunity that comes my way. I know if I have felt strongly enough about any one of them, that my answer needed to come from God. My favorite Bible saying is, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. I pray it every day, especially when I am nervous or stressed about something. Then, I pray it over and over again.”
