The Midlothian City Council took steps to upgrade its utility system at its Tuesday night meeting.
Council approved the contract with Gomez Brothers Construction for $205,600.
Improvements on the water and sewer lines will take place between North Third and Fourth Streets at U.S. Highway 287 Business and between Rockcliff Drive and West Avenue C.
Adam Mergener, director of public works, stated the work would improve service to residents
“The current water line between Rock Cliff and Avenue C is an inch and a half two inches in diameter. We are going to improve that line to six inches, which will improve fire protection in that area,” Mergener said. “It is the same thing with the sewer line. The sewer line is in bad shape over there.”
Mergener stated some of the lines are clay and others are the original PVC pipes. Another issue is the dirt in the area, which can become hot. If the pipe is not protected correctly, it will corrode quicker. This condition has caused several leaks in the past.
“Our goal is to improve pressure, improve the reliability and the utilities in the area,” Mergener said.
According to documents from the city, the project involves installing 1,100 linear feet of six-inch water line. Two hundred and seventy-five of linear feet of six inch and 650 linear feet of eight-inch sewer line will be installed.
Council members approved an ordinance amending and restating the development and usage regulations for planned development district 100.
This change allows for the development of the Freedom Self Storage facility. The facility would be located near the intersection of McAlpin Road and Farm-to-Market Road 66. It would provide office space as well as storage units.
Donald Jones, representing the developer, stated the office space would not be for a high-intensity use.
“The two 15,000 square foot office spaces will be broken up into smaller spaces,” Jones said.
Council members were concerned about the traffic impact the development would bring. So they limited the offices for professional uses such as doctors offices, accountants, and attorneys.
