Midlothian Heritage and Stephenville, two of the top-five teams in 4A met on the rain-soaked turf at Memorial Stadium on Friday for one of the early game-of-the-year favorites.
Though, despite the rain when the general thought is to run the football, both Associated Press No. 5 Stephenville and No. 4 Heritage combined for only 110 rushing yards while throwing for 593 yards on 67 total attempts on the campus of Tarleton State University.
The Yellow Jackets trailed for the majority of the non-district contest until Daniel Luna returned a Heritage fumble 79 yards for a go-ahead score, 21-20, with 3:10 to play in the fourth quarter.
The Heritage offense quickly responded two plays later when senior quarterback Landon Ledbetter found Senior wideout Langston Anderson for a 66-yard touchdown. The extra-point kick failed but the Jaguars held on to the 26-21 road win.
Ledbetter led the way in the Heritage passing department with 348 yards on 22-of-34 through the air. He tossed three touchdowns — two to Langston Anderson (5-86) and one to Jay Wilkerson (7-126).
Ledbetter has now posted back-to-back 300-yard passing games and has 13 touchdowns to just three interceptions with 952 yards through the first four games of the season. His 348 yards through the air on Friday are a new season-high, coming one week after he tossed for 316 yards and five touchdowns last week in a 56-21 win against Decatur.
Anderson (5) and Wilkerson (7) have been on the receiving end of the majority of Ledbetter's touchdown passes and have combined for 781 receiving yards.
Kade Renfro led the Yellow Jackets through the air with 245 yards on 18-of-31 passing and two touchdowns after he entered for starting quarterback Cole Stanley early in the first quarter.
Heritage opened the scoring when Dre Washington (16-42) and the Jaguars offense capitalized on a muffed Stephenville punt with an 11-yard rushing touchdown.
The Jaguars scored again on their ensuing possession. Ledbetter found Anderson for their first of two touchdowns through the air on the first play of the second quarter. The 8-yard pitch-and-catch capped an eight-play, 41-yard drive that began after a second Stephenville fumble.
The 14-0 Heritage lead was erased on a pair of touchdown passes from Renfro to Gavin Rountree (19 yards) and Krece Nowak (50 yards), with the latter coming with 3:52 to play in the first half.
Heritage retook the lead when Ledbetter found Jay Wilkerson for a 36-yard touchdown on the 12th play from scrimmage for the Jaguars in the second half.
Luna then returned a Heritage fumble and Anderson scored the game-winner with 2:44 to play in the fourth quarter to keep Heritage undefeated through the first four games of the season. Stephenville fell to 2-2 with the loss.
Konner Jones and Noah Parker led the Jaguars with eight total tackles. Jones added 1.5 tackles-for-loss, while Anderson led the Jaguars with two sacks. Wyatt Thomas and Jones recovered both Jaguars fumbles.
Heritage returns home at 7:30 p.m. Friday against (2-2) Waco La Vega, while Stephenville looks to bounce back at 7 p.m. Friday at home against Georgetown.
