Cupcakes are coming to this year’s 5K run during the 41st annual Fall Festival.
The event will now kickoff at 8 a.m. with a sweet-tooth twist at the Midlothian ISD Multipurpose Stadium, located at 923 S 9th St.
“This year, everyone after the run will get a YUMS cupcake from Brookshire's,” Chamber of Commerce president Cammy Jackson said. “We’ve had a 5K for a number of years, but this year we added the cupcake part to it.”
According to Brookshire's manager Monica Mitsch, the Fall Festival and 5K cupcake run will feature vanilla and chocolate cupcakes distributed to participants at the conclusion of the run. Jackson said she brought the idea to her committee while they planned for the festival earlier this year.
“You see the turkey trot, you see the hot chocolate run and the donut run in Dallas,” Jackson explained. “I thought, well if they can have all these kind of fun runs, why can’t we have a cupcake run? Because I haven’t seen a cupcake run anywhere.”
In addition to the cupcake run, the fall festival will also feature a 7/11 Slurpee truck, over 100 vendors and a kid zone. Jackson said she expects this year's turnout to be somewhere between 2,500 and 3,000 attendants.
She said, based on the feedback the chamber has received online so far, that the cupcake run has been popular, to say the least.
“They loved the idea,” she said. “They think it’s the greatest thing. Whether they run or not, I don’t know. But that’s the important thing.”
The 5K offers a reduced price if participants register a group of five or more. Pre-registration for five-person groups is $20 per runner before the festival and $25 for individuals. To sign up for the 5K Cupcake run and Fall Festival, go online at www.midlothianchamber.org.
