The Midlothian Heritage baseball team ran its consecutive-wins total to four with a hard-fought victory Tuesday night against Venus.

The Jaguars hung crooked numbers in the first, third and fourth innings and then fended off a Bulldogs comeback for the 7-3 win in the opener of the two-game series.

Travis Belz (5-0, 0.63 ERA) earned the win on the bump for the Jaguars. He tossed 4.2 innings of three-hit baseball and struck out nine. Both runs he allowed were unearned.

Noah Nelson came on in relief for Heritage, tossing the final 2.1 innings. He struck out five, walked one and allowed one unearned run on one hit.

Cameron Buck took the complete-game loss for the Venus Bulldogs. He allowed seven runs (four earned) on nine hits and three walks while also striking out two.

The Jaguars bats got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of runs scored courtesy of a passed ball and Venus error. Caisen Clower doubled in the inning and Roc Martinez reached via a fielder's choice that erased Cade Sumbler off of the basepaths after his double.

Both Clower and Martinez eventually scored.

Heritage then plated two more runs in the bottom of the third inning when Harrison Hess singled up the middle to score Blake Wilhoite and Brayton McDaniel.

Three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning — Sumbler, Clower and Cody Moore — had the Jaguars on top 7-1.

The Bulldogs scored one run in each of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings on RBIs credited to Cameron Buck and Tyler Henrich.

Sumbler, Clower and Moore all doubled for the Jaguars and each recorded a multi-hit night.

Heritage improved to 16-4 on the season with the win and 4-1 in District 17-4A, while the Bulldogs fell to 6-12 overall and 1-5 in district action.

The two teams return to action at 7 p.m. Friday in Venus.
