DALLAS — Midlothian High School seniors Tanner Henderson and Keila Finnestad will be headed to the University Interscholastic League state cross country championships in their respective divisions after qualifying as medalists in the Class 5A Region II meet on Monday at the Jesse Owens Memorial Complex.
Henderson finished the 5,000-meter boys’ race in fourth place in a time of 15 minutes, 21.95 seconds, a little more than three seconds behind third-place Wyatt Wingard of Frisco Reedy. Will Muirhead of Lucas Lovejoy won in 14:59.30, followed by Christian Rivera of Kaufman in 15:11.91.
Meanwhile, Finnestad finished in 12th place in the girls’ regional race, in a time of 18:59.96. Colleen Stegmann of Reedy won in 17:14.57, and Amy Morefield of Lovejoy was second in 17:29.90.
Henderson and Finnestad will head to Round Rock for the UIL Class 5A state meet, which will be Nov. 9 at Old Settlers Park. Both qualify by virtue of being among the top runners who are not members of a state-qualifying team.
As a team, the Panther boys finished in eighth place with 248 points. Lovejoy (60 points), Reedy (151), and Frisco Wakeland and Kaufman (both 171) rounded out the top four.
Senior Seth Swick finished 48th in a time of 16:48.62, followed by classmate Wesley Wright in 52nd in 16:52.88. Junior Trenton Blackerby (76th in 17:07.54) and sophomore Caden Grisham (110th in 17:43.21) completed the top five for MHS. Sophomore Caeleb Bridgins (116th in 17:45.43) and freshman Daemon Rodriguez (130th in 18:04.55) also finished the race.
The MHS girls’ team finished seventh, will behind team champion Highland Park and runner-up Lovejoy.
Sophomore Avalon Mitchell came in 37th in 19:51.54, and junior Cheyenne Corbitt was 42nd in 19:59.45. Junior Mariah Griffin was 54th in 20:13.69 and sophomore Autumn Tennes was 61st in 20:30.97. Senior Tkai Strickland (64th in 20:39.20) and freshman Samantha Presas (122nd in 22:33.55) also ran for the Panthers.
