WACO — The Midlothian Lady Panthers won two games to qualify for the Gold Bracket in the M.T. Rice tournament at Waco Midway, but dropped their quarterfinal game against the host team and went on to lose the next pair in consolation play to wind up 2-3 in the tournament.
All three of the Lady Panthers’ losses in the tourney came against Class 6A competition.
The Lady Panthers opened pool play with a 38-30 victory against Waco High on Thursday.
Later on Thursday, the scene shifted to nearby Lorena High School, where the Lady Panthers prevailed, 38-35, against Houston Kinkaid.
The two wins pushed MHS into the Gold Bracket quarterfinals, where the Lady Panthers suffered a 56-39 loss to the host Pantherettes, who are ranked No. 21 in Class 6A.
Sophomore post Marlissa Watson led Midway with 17 points, and Shamaryah Duncan, who has signed with Wichita State, added 12 points.
The Lady Panthers moved into the consolation bracket and dropped a hard-fought 49-45 loss against Class 6A Rockwall-Heath. The team then wrapped up the tournament with a setback against 6A Southlake Carroll.
District 14-5A play will resume for the Lady Panthers (12-12, 1-1) on Friday evening, as they head back down Interstate 35 for a game at Waco University at 6:15 p.m. They will host Cleburne next Tuesday.
