KAUFMAN — The Class 5A No. 24-ranked Midlothian Panthers salvaged a third-place finish at the 28th annual Kaufman Holiday Tournament on Saturday and pulled a mild upset in the process, knocking off 5A No. 20 Fort Worth Brewer, 41-35.

The Panthers (14-7) advanced to the semifinals with two wins, but a cold start resulted in a 56-50 loss to 5A No. 11 Frisco Independence early on Saturday.

The Panthers fell behind 23-6 to end the first quarter and, although MHS rallied to pull within 29-25 at the half, could never quite close the gap completely.

The Panthers won both of their games on Friday, beating 5A Private School No. 10-ranked Dallas Christian, 72-42, and unranked Forney, 43-33.

In the game against Forney, the Panthers trailed by two at the half, 20-18, but used a 17-8 surge in the third quarter to take the lead for good.

The Panthers will open District 14-5A play at Waco University on Friday, then will host Cleburne next Tuesday.
