RED OAK — The Class 5A No. 13-ranked Midlothian Panthers were that close to grabbing a share of the District 14-5A championship on Tuesday night. But the No. 12 Red Oak Hawks rallied from six down to end regulation and pulled out a 78-75 double-overtime thriller in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Panthers (23-9, 10-2) settled for the No. 2 seed and will face Mesquite Poteet on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Cedar Hill in the bi-district round of the Class 5A Region II playoffs.

MHS took a 43-37 lead into the final eight minutes, but the Hawks outscored them 22-16 in the fourth period to tie the game at the end of regulation at 59-all. The game was still knotted at the end of the first overtime, 67-all.

On Friday night, the Panthers celebrated Senior Night and had even more reason to be festive afterward as head coach Steven Middleton marked his 100th win at MHS in a 60-39 rout of Corsicana.

It was the final game at home for seniors Nyk Madison, Jackson Tollefsbol, Trevor Wyckoff, Paden Harris, Corbin Carpenter, Omari Bobbitt and Haylen Mattiza.

Madison led the way with 19 points, followed by Bobbitt with 12 and Tollefsbol with 10. Other scorers were freshman Kelton Williams and junior Corbin Green with seven points each, Harris and junior Ben Huh with two each and Mattiza with one.

The Panthers outscored the Tigers in all four quarters, leading 14-11 after one, 28-19 at the half and 42-26 to end the third.
