Panthers drop thriller, then handle Corsicana
MHS boys rally in fourth quarter, but come up just short in OT vs. rivals
RED OAK — The Midlothian Panthers fought back from a huge halftime deficit to force overtime last Tuesday night, but the Panthers fell short by one point in a 63-62 loss to Ellis County rival Red Oak in District 14-5A play.
Kelton Williams led the Panthers with 16 points and seven rebounds, and Calix Hampton added 11 points and three steals. Other scorers were Rorik Harrison with nine points, Nathan Shepherd with eight, Ovie Agbigbe with seven, Taylor Tobey with five, Trevor Tobey with four, and Alex Becerra with two.
The Panthers trailed at halftime, 32-18, but rallied with an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter to take the lead briefly before regulation ended with the score knotted at 50-all.
Kirk Queensborough scored a game-high 22 for the Hawks with five 3-pointers, including back-to-back treys in the extra period that gave Red Oak the upper hand. Devin Boone followed with 12 and Jace Wyatt with 11.
MHS (12-11, 2-1) was able to bounce back against Corsicana at MHS Arena on Friday night, winning 57-36.
Shepherd led the Panthers with 12 points and eight rebounds, followed by Hampton with nine points and six boards. Other scorers were Taylor Tobey with seven points, Agbigbe and Cooper Wyckoff with six each, Bryce Tennison with five, and Williams, Harrison and Trevor Tobey with four each.
The Panthers were scheduled to travel to Waco University on Tuesday night. They will host Cleburne on Friday night with tip-off set for 8 p.m., and will have a district open date next Tuesday.
