Southwest Airlines announced on Wednesday that it has received authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration to offer service to Hawaii from California, according to a report by Reuters. The airline also said it will release the timing for selling tickets soon.
The announcement follows months of speculation and anticipation.
Although the certification process was delayed in part because of the government shutdown, some sources have said flights could be offered to passengers as soon as next month. Initial flights will leave out of California cities including Oakland, San Diego, Sacramento and San Jose, with service into Honolulu, Kona, Kahului and Lihue, Southwest has said. Inter-island service will also be offered.
