Good guys with guns?

“I believe in Jesus, guns and babies.” So declares Kandiss Taylor, GOP candidate for governor of Georgia, in a campaign ad. Or how about: “I’m Eric Greitens, Navy SEAL, and today, we’re going RINO-hunting.” This is not about killing rhinoceroses. “RINO” stands for Republican in Name Only – you know, anti-Trumpers. Greitens, former governor of Missouri, who resigned in the wake of a sexual abuse allegation, is now running for the Senate – running fully armed and dangerous as hell, at least according to his little TV ad, which features him and a bunch of guys dressed up in camouflage outfits, fully armed, kicking someone’s door open, tossing in a smoke bomb.

Help make the most of every drop during drought

With rising temperatures and record-breaking winds, paired with the lack of precipitation historically seen during this time of year, it is very evident that drought conditions have gripped a large portion of the state, including Ellis County. It is important now more than ever to be efficient with the watering residents do during this time. According to the Texas Water Development Board, outdoor water use can account for 50 to 80 percent of home water use during the summertime.

Allgaier cruises to NASCAR Xfinity victory

On a blindingly hot day at Nashville Superspeedway, Justin Allgaier fulfilled a dream in one of the best race cars he has ever had. Leading five times for 134 laps and sweeping the first two stages of Saturday’s Tennessee Lottery 250, Allgaier breezed to his first NASCAR Xfinity Series victory at the 1.33-mile concrete track, his second of the season and the 18th of his career.

All bream are sunfish, but not all sunfish are bream

I’m about to open a box of worms with this week’s column (pun intended). I love catching and eating what I and most folks call ‘perch’ or bream. Light tackle, a long shank ‘perch’ hook, a box of worms and we are ready to go ‘perch’ fishing, right? Come to find out, to properly categorize the fish we are targeting, we are about to go fishing for ‘sunfish’.
