Students begin a new school year with hopes and dreams of better lives. Teachers and administrators similarly have high hopes for their students, trying to create classrooms and schools of the highest quality where these dreams can be nurtured and minds developed, as difficult as this sometimes is given the limits of budgets. Southern Methodist University in Dallas was created with such hopes but also with many obstacles. In the end, SMU was the result of a fight to relocate another college and the fate of a Dallas medical school that culminated in a world-class university.

HHS routs Jackets for Edwards’ 1st win

CLEBURNE — It took just two plays and 40 seconds for Heritage High School to assert its complete dominance of Cleburne — and give head coach Eric Edwards his first victory. Senior running back Jason Barela slipped a couple of tackles and rambled 55 yards for an 8-0 advantage, and the beating continued from there in a 64-0 blowout win at Yellow Jacket Stadium that was HHS’ first as a Class 5A program.

Russians risking another Chernobyl at nuclear facility

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, lies along the Dnieper River in southeastern Ukraine. After Russian forces brutally invaded Ukraine six months ago, they gained control of the nuclear facility early in the fighting. They based soldiers and heavy equipment there and have been using the plant as a defensive shield, lobbing shells from there and hoping Ukrainians would not risk hitting one of the six power units by counterattacking.

Burn ban rescinded in Ellis County

In a quick special meeting on Tuesday, the Ellis County Commissioners’ Court voted unanimously to lift ahead of schedule a 90-day burn ban that had been in place since June 26. The lifting of the ban is effective immediately, but regulations governing open burning are still in place in the county.

MISD runners shine at own meet

Both Midlothian ISD schools performed well on Thursday as they co-hosted the James Smith Invitational at MISD Multipurpose Stadium. The Midlothian Lady Panthers finished second overall, the Panthers were fifth in their division, and Heritage High School represented throughout the day.
