The importance of giving

North Texans opened their wallets and their hearts last week to help local nonprofits across the region, including in Ellis County. The Communities Foundation of Texas’ 14th Annual North Texas Giving Day, presented by Amazon, wrapped up Thursday with an unofficial total of $62 million received in donations.

Being virtuous can sometimes be a pain

I guess it’s my occupation but I’ve been thinking a lot about the holidays. There is both joy and pain in the upcoming season. Thanksgiving no doubt is relevant to our spiritual lives (1st Thessalonians 5:18) and Christmas is the obvious (Isaiah 6:9). The pain for us is family. Who can travel, who can’t, who wants to and who doesn’t blah, blah, blah. I’m sure you feel the pain.

Texas Baptist Home for Children needs local help

One of the oldest and mostbeneficialnonprofits in all of Ellis County is Texas Baptist Home for Children, better known as “TBHC Foster Care & Adoption.” Since 1910, this organization has been serving the children of Texas and helping counties in North Texas and the Permian Basin. Their main focus is to serve children and families through foster care (by recruiting, training, and resources and support for families); assist with adoptions (private infant adoption as well as kinship and matched adoptions); and provide teen pregnancy care services.

Scholarships for EMS education and training available from DSHS

The Texas Department of State Health Services is providing emergency medical service (EMS) scholarships to help interested Texans complete education and training to begin careers in the EMS field. The Texas Legislature provided $21 million to fund the scholarships for students using approved EMS education programs and licensed EMS providers, with special attention given to rural and other underserved areas of Texas.
