7 from county run at UIL state meet

ROUND ROCK — Seven Ellis County runners competed on Friday and Saturday in the University Interscholastic League state cross country championships at Old Settlers Park. The highest placement among the contingent was by Life Waxahachie senior Charzell Williams, who crossed the finish line in 38th place in her third and final appearance in the Class 4A girls’ title race.

When even a phonebook draws call for censorship

I have been missing my lifelong friend and childhood hero, Toby Dawn McIntyre, so I was excited to see him standing on the front porch. I barely opened the door, however, when he pushed past me. “Where you hiding them, Tommy Boy?” he demanded as he began rifling through random cabinets, drawers, and closets. I played it cool while I mentally checked off all the items I had hidden from him for his own good over the years (mostly harmonicas, roller blades, and berets). “The phonebooks!” he screamed. “Phonebooks!”

Lawson building plan moves forward

Another major downtown Midlothian landmark is well on its way to receiving new life following recent action by the City Council. A concept plan and elevations for one of the former Lawson buildings at 211 West Main Street were unanimously approved for a restaurant and apartment development during the Oct.

Opening day deer hunt

In last week’s column I used a good bit of space in this awesome publication elaborating on just how important the opener of deer season is here in Texas. The opener has come and gone for the almost two million deer hunters in Texas and we all have our stories. Many will be reliving the experience of once again spending a couple days living the hunter’s lifestyle in the ‘wilds’ for months to come. Other will be busy after work this week putting venison steaks and roast in their freezer. Some were fortunate to harvest that wall hanger buck of their dreams and many connected with ‘their’ trophy in the form of a spike buck or doe for the freezer.
