Council sets 2026 maximum tax rate

In a meeting light on agenda items, the Midlothian City Council on Tuesday night held a record vote to maintain the city’s ad valorem property tax rate at a maximum of 65 cents per $100 taxable valuation for the 2025-2026 fiscal year.

The vote, however, is only the first step toward final approval. A public hearing regarding the rate will be held at the Sept. 9 City Council meeting.

City Manager Chris Dick told the council that 65 cents, which is the city’s current rate, is the maximum rate that can be approved. A lower rate can still be decided during the September vote.

In other business, the City Council awarded a $723,756 total bid to Atkins Bros Equipment Co. for the South 5th Street utility package project; awarded a $321,180 total bid to Day Services, LLC for a 16-inch water line and bore underneath U.S. 287; and approved the appointments of Greg Wilhelm and Tim Tobey to Midlothian Economic Development, Bobby Worley to the Parks Board, and Valencia Daniels to the Utility Advisory Board.

Following an executive session to discuss a real estate matter, no action was taken. All councilmembers were present.
