In last week’s column I used a good bit of space in this awesome publication elaborating on just how important the opener of deer season is here in Texas. The opener has come and gone for the almost two million deer hunters in Texas and we all have our stories. Many will be reliving the experience of once again spending a couple days living the hunter’s lifestyle in the ‘wilds’ for months to come. Other will be busy after work this week putting venison steaks and roast in their freezer. Some were fortunate to harvest that wall hanger buck of their dreams and many connected with ‘their’ trophy in the form of a spike buck or doe for the freezer.

Pastor Alan Pollard often looks out the front window of his church and sees a bulky fixture he once thought could help him spread his gospel far and wide. Instead, the AT&T fiber box has become a daily reminder of the church’s inability to access broadband.

In partnership with the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB), Manna House of Ellis County participated in the “Feed the Need” food drive during the 2022 State Fair of Texas. Every Wednesday during the State Fair of Texas, fairgoers could gain entrance to the fair for only $5 when they donated five canned goods.

Midlothian Mayor Richard Reno proclaimed Nov. 5, 2022, Arbor Day in Midlothian at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 25. To celebrate, the City’s Parks and Recreation Department will hold a free tree giveaway on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Community Park, near the splash pad, 3601 S. 14th Street, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Midlothian Lions Club has announced that it will hold its annual Pancake Breakfast next Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Midlothian Civic Center at 224 South 11th Street from 7 a.m-10:30 a.m.

The Midlothian Downtown Business Association’s Scarecrow Festival is at its peak this weekend, with entries on display at Heritage Park. Winning entries will be announced on Friday. An Overall Grand Prize (People’s Choice Voted Best Overall) of $500 will be awarded. The MDBA will also issue prizes for the following categories: Judged Best General (18 And Older); Judged Best Business/Service; Judged Best Nonprofit Organization Or Group; Judged Best Teen (6th-12th Grade); and Judged Best Youth (5th Grade And Under). The prizes for each category are: 1st Place: $200; 2nd Place: $150; 3rd Place: $75.

MANSFIELD — Methodist Mansfield Medical Center has named Midlothian resident Crystal Brown its vice president of operations. Brown’s role will focus on general hospital operations with emphasis on patient satisfaction. She will oversee 13 departments including oversight of numerous construction projects.
