Boyce Whatley 1957-2024: ‘A true leader, supporter and friend’

Bill Spinks wspinks@cherryroad.com Midlothian community members had kind words for public servant Boyce Whatley, who served as mayor of the city from May 2005 to December 2011 and filled numerous other roles in city leadership. Word was received last week that Whatley died on Sept. 17 at the age of 66. “On behalf of the Midlothian City Council and staff, Mayor Justin Coffman extends his heartfelt condolences to the family of Boyce Layne Whatley upon his passing,” the city posted on its Facebook page. “Our community lost a true leader, supporter and friend with the passing of Boyce on Sept. 17.” According to the city’s social media, Midlothian had the honor and benefit of 18 years of public service from Whatley, who served as a member of the Park Board (1989-1992), Midlothian Community Development Corporation (original member 1998-1999), Planning and Zoning Commission (1998-1999), Capital Improvement Program Citizens Advisory Committee (1998), City Council (1999-2005). “During the years he displayed exemplary dedication to the best interests of this community by working tirelessly for the betterment of its economic, cultural, and aesthetic development,” the city stated. “He brought an array of talents to his performance of this job and represented the city with vigor and an unrivalled passion.” Whatley’s life was celebrated on Saturday at First Methodist Church in Midlothian. Memorial gifts in his name can be made to the church’s Care Ministry for Assisted Living or Food for Kids programs. “Boyce and his wife Sheila were married for 42 years,” the city stated. “He was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather, and a faithful community servant.” He is also survived by his daughter Kelsie Merrell and her husband Clay and their two children Fallon and Jack; his son Hayden Whatley and his wife Brenna and their two children Emerson and Madelyn; […]

Mary Ellen Crowe

Mary Ellen Crowe, 94, of Midlothian passed away peacefully on December 18, 2022, at Buffalo Creek Memory Care. Mary was born on November 7,1928 in Highlands New York. She met the love of her life, Jack Crowe, while he was stationed at West Point. Their love took Mary to Texas where they married and established their home. Mary, aka Nanny, was a loving, caring and selfless lady. She enjoyed making her family-recipe spaghetti sauce, crossword puzzles, collecting precious moments figurines and oil painting. Painting brought joy to her and everyone who saw her works of art. One of her most cherished achievements was winning 1st and 2nd places at the State Fair with her paintings. She held “Nanny Camp” for her grandkids each summer where awesome memories were made. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her. Mary is survived by her 3 children: Pat Crowe and wife, Reta, Steve Crowe and wife, Leisha, Laurie Austin and husband, Terry. Her brother, Pat Duffy and wife RuthAnn. Her grandchildren: Travis,Lindsey, Emily, Katie, Stefanie and Cris. Her Great- Grandchildren: Gracie, Tommy, Wayden, Bryka, Rypp, Brynlee, Storie, Audrey, Haley, Savannah and Rhett.
