The big bite is on!

The same cooling weather that triggers the fall migration of waterfowl and gets deer up and moving also kicks off one of the best “big” bites in freshwater. About this time each year when the water temperature begins to drop in areas lakes, big catfish go on the prowl. I and, most fishermen I’ve visited with, attribute this to the fact that the fish’s internal clock knows it’s about to get cold and their metabolism will slow a bit, it’s time for them to put on the feed sack and fatten up for the winter months ahead. Huge schools of threadfin and gizzard shad have dispersed widespread in our lakes and it’s a time of plenty of every fish species in fresh water.

Jags stay in hunt for playoff berth

The Heritage High School volleyball team battled Mansfield Timberview to a five-set loss on Friday, but remains in contention for a playoff berth entering the final week of the regular season. The Jaguars fought back from a set down to force a fifth set, but came away with a 19-25, 25-15, 25-22, 19-25, 15-13 setback at the new HHS Arena on Friday evening.

Bell advances in playoffs with dramatic win at Charlotte

In a turn of events that bordered on the unbelievable, Christopher Bell found his only path to the Round of 8 in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs. On fresh tires, thanks to a strategic pit stop under caution on Lap 105, Bell passed Kevin Harvick to the outside through Turns 1 and 2 after a restart on Lap 111 and pulled away to win Sunday’s Bank of America ROVAL 400 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course.
