GRANBURY — The Midlothian Panthers are off to their fastest start since 1984. De’ago Benson scored three total touchdowns and Jordon Richburg added two rushing scores as the Panthers remained unbeaten with a dominating 56-7 victory over Granbury in a District 4-5A (Division I) game at Pirate Stadium.

The Class 5A No. 16-ranked Midlothian Lady Panthers are closing in on a District 8-5A championship — but the Lady Panthers hit a speed bump against one of the top smallschool teams in the state this weekend.

Despite their 6-0 start to the season, the Midlothian Panthers are still not listed in the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Class 5A Division I statewide rankings. But with more performances like the one Friday night, that could change soon.

The scene shifted to Heritage High School last Tuesday evening for the second installment of the new rivalry between the Midlothian and Heritage volleyball teams. The only difference in the outcome, however, was that this time the Jaguars took a set as the Class 5A No.

Having been raised on a small farm in northeast Texas, it’s hard for me to look at a hog, feral or domestic, as a pest but when it comes to feral hogs, I’ve had to change my thinking. Wild hogs do a great deal of damage to ranch and farmland and create problems for native wildlife, especially ground-nesting birds such as turkey and quail. Their numbers have to be controlled, I get that. But, it’s still hard for me to see all that good eating pork going to waste.

For the last 60 years, Midlothian’s claim to fame has been cement. The 31,000-person city 25 miles south of Dallas is home to three of the nation’s 10 largest cement factories, sparking rapid population growth in the hub, which has expanded by 448% since the turn of the century.
